The Kailua Village Artists’ featured artist for May is gouache painter Gail Yasin.

Yasin has been involved in the arts since she was a child. She focused on art as a career path when she studied figure and portrait at Moldrem’s Atelier of Art in Seattle. Yasin was accepted to the Burnley Commercial Art School — later named The Seattle Art Institute. Commercial art school gave her a solid foundation in design, production art, graphics, illustration and fine art, broadening her skills from oil painting to multimedia. Fine art teacher Bill Cummings encouraged her to pursue painting.

Yasin paints with gouache, an opaque watercolor, in vivacious colors. She renders local scenes, people and animals that capture light, intensity and feeling. “It’s all about losing one’s self in the moment, stepping back from the canvas a few hours later, and feeling expanded like only minutes have passed,” she said.

The public is invited to talk story with Yasin May 13 and 27 at the gallery located at 75-5729 Alii Drive, Suite C-110, in the Kona Marketplace. Yasin will demonstrate her gouache painting techniques and exhibit her latest work. The gallery is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. For more information, call 329-6653.
